Janis Rainis, real name Jānis Pliekšāns (born September 11, 1865, died September 12, 1929) - Latvian writer, playwright and journalist, translator of Russian, German and English literature, author of children's books. Social democratic politician, Minister of Education of Latvia in 1926-1928. He had a significant influence on the development of the Latvian literary language and Latvian literature. Author of the words of the patriotic song Saule, Pērkons, Daugava.
